Being a Mother, No Matter What [Union Springs Herald]

Sunday is a day to celebrate mothers around the world who contribute so much to our society. I recently read a definition of mother: a woman who loves unconditionally, leads by example, and puts others before herself. This definition can be universally true and the world would be so much better if we all lived up to this definition, no matter our gender or parental status.

Unconditional love is something you give to others for them to keep. You do it of your own free will and do not expect anything in return. When we love this way, we are offering true love—the type of love that allows others to be who they are. What if we all loved unconditionally, offering our love freely and without conditions? We would do kind things without demanding kindness in return. We would not have unrealistic expectations of others but would love them with their limitations.

When we love others unconditionally, we also lead by example, like mothers do. The only way to change the world around you is to be the change you want to see in the world. Say it. Do it. Live it. Leading by example is the most important thing we can do in the world to change it.

And, mothers or not, we can all put others before ourselves. The Apostle Paul encouraged the Philippians to “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3. Almost 2000 years later, there is still value in putting others first.

It is not always easy being a mother. And it is not always easy to love unconditionally, lead by example, or put others above yourself. But, when you do, you will find the ultimate success in life – living a life filled with love for yourself and the world around you.
